US labor laws divide the workforce into two distinct
segments: Exempt employees exercise independent judgement,
and are salaried and *exempt* from the laws governing
payment of time-and-one-half for working more than 8 hours/
day or more than 40 hrs/week. Non-exempt employees do not
exercise independent judgement on the job, and are *non-
exempt* from laws governing overtime pay.
"Independent judgement" is one of the tests used to determine
whether a position should be exempt or non-exempt.
So, in addition to the pithy explanations already given to
you by the rest of the peanut gallery, the job ad is
informing you that you will be an hourly, not salaried,
employee.
