I have a question about data dictionaries. Are there any tools out
there to
develop a data dictionary? First, let me explain the context of my
question.
Our usability specialist wants recommendations on how to design/build
something that SHE calls a "data dictionary" but *sounds* like a plain
old
thesaurus or glossary.
It sounds like you have your work cut out for you!
A data dictionary is a "document" that shows relationships between
data elements. As you know, relationships are the key components of
metadata.
One way to begin to take charge of your situation is to write a set of
requirements that your "data dictionary" must meet. Your first set of
requirements will not be perfect. People will shoot at them. You will
feel unloved, etc. However, once you have the FULL SET of
requirements, you can develop a specification for implementing the
required information structure.
Now, you can begin to look for software tools that will meet your
needs. Alternatively, you can populate your own information structure.
The result will be more shooting (at your data dictionary). However,
stick with the requirements. If someone does not like something about
the dictionary, make sure the requirements are appropriately modified.
When your data dictionary meets all of the requirements, you can start
to use it.
BTW, Google provides 428,000 hits for "data dictionary." However, if
you ask for "usability data dictionary" you get a big fat zero! :-)
