>Every interview I've been

Some interviewers, especially the HR screeners, don't know the difference
between how to hire an employee and how to hire a contractor. So it may be
that the interviewers you encountered don't necessarily reflect what the
actual work environment is like for contractors - it could be that the
people you'd actually work with do understand your role.
It's also possible that as the economy emerges into what appears to be a new
hiring phase, someone in HR, feeling that it's still a buyer's market,
decreed that "all candidates shall be screened for vision." In this case,
too, interviewing image of the company and actual project conditions could
still differ from each other.
