When I decided to move to Chicago 15 years ago [ack! has it been that
long?], I didn't have a job lined up either. I had a degree but not a lot of
experience as a tech writer. What worked for me at that time was to take the
first job that I could get that was even remotely related to publishing
(turned out to be at a professional typesetting company). I continued
looking for a "real" job, but at least I had money coming in. It took about
four more months for me to land a job as an editorial assistant.
I stayed with that company for three years (until I had enough experience to
look good on my resume), then I found the wonderful world of contract jobs.
For a younger person with no family to care for, this is a great option. You
usually get higher pay and can hop from one job to another until you find
one that you particularly like. Then you can try to become a direct employee
or at least a long-term contractor.
It sounds as if you already have some experience, so you might be able to
bypass the lower-level jobs. Start with the employment/temp agencies in the
areas to which you are interested in relocating. Fax your resume to as many
as you can so you get your name out there. Many may not have a lot of jobs
specifically for tech writers, but as the jobs trickle in, you could get
some calls.
