I'm not disputing Ms. Gallagher's advice, but I would warn you about
cross-referencing to headings in general. The internally generated markers
that Word uses to identify headings in cross-references are somehow based
on their positions within the document. I've never figured out whether
they're just offsets from the beginning of the document or what, but they
can go badly awry (i.e., stop working correctly) if you rearrange the document.
Just something to watch out for.
In my own documents, I *always* cross-reference to bookmarks rather than
headings, which is foolproof as long as you're careful not to insert text
inside the bookmars. (That's easy to avoid if you just leave bookmarks
visible all the time.)
