Afternoon all,
The recent discussion about cross-references to headings got me thinking,
and so now I'm wondering what the pros and cons are of using Word's
cross-references or the bookmarks.
I've been using cross-references to headings because, on the pro side,
they are easy to insert, and automagically give you a hypertext field with
the name of the section you are referring to and a "on page XX" for people
who insist on printing. However, on the con side, I have noticed that if
I'm moving text around, a cross-reference field that used to contain
heading text can suddenly contain heaps of body text.
I've look at the bookmark feature as a possible substitute for xrefs, but
it seems to involve going to the heading you are going to reference,
typing a name for the bookmark you create (with no spaces or Word gets
stubborn), and then going back to where you want to insert the reference,
opening Insert>Xref, and finding the bookmark in your potentially very
long list.
So given that using bookmarks to cross-reference to involves an extra step
and lots of extra typing, what's the advantage of bookmarks over
cross-refs?
