Me, arrogant? Ha!
As David notes, "the excellent is often at war with
the good." However, not only the good is at war with
the excellent. So is the lousy.
If someone has found that every single technical writer
is a counterproductive nitpicker obsessing over "obscure
points in grammar and punctuation," perhaps those points
are not so obscure after all?
The problem with these arguments is that they occur
all along the axis. When one manager grumbles about
the writer who wants to delay publication another day in
order to make sure the borders around the illustrations
are all the same thickness, and another manager grumbles
about a writer who balks at incorporating 35 pages of
new material straight from the developers without even
reading it, the managers sound remarkably alike.
