Re: OT: National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE)
I'm considering purchasing health insurance from the National
Association for the Self-Employed (NASE). Has anyone here any
experience with this group? The insurance company they use is The MEGA
Life and Health Insurance Company.
MEGA seems to be one of the largest insurers for universities and public school districts in the US. I passed your query on to a friend who works for a college that recently evaluated many possible insurers for their students and faculty. He sent back this excerpt from a 2002 report by the state of Wisconsin. He also said that their followup research on MEGA seemed to show that most of the complaints were related to inaccurate information provided by poorly trained and/or deceptive agents, not about the company itself or its coverage.

My friend's bottom-line recommendation, no matter which company you go with, is to read ALL the fine print on ALL the forms and contracts before you sign anything, and to insist on written explanations and responses to all questions.
Good luck.
