Re: Why WYSIWYG for XML???
I note (with no small amount of consternation) that many writers, when
considering going to XML, are looking for WYSIWYG authoring tools. In
my experience, using WYSIWYG tools are a real barrier to getting writers
into the mindset of semantic markup versus visual layout.
I agree with Bill 100%... If you are marking up content for output into multiple formats, which format would the WYSIWYG editor show you?
Besides, WYSIWYG editors always get into trouble with tables.
On the other hand, for long stretches of ordinary paragraphs with nothing more complex than H1/H2/H3, sometimes I wish for an editor with more of a word-processing look and feel. But only as a convenience, not as a way to avoid learning the markup. When I find one I trust to create clean markup, I'll use it (so far I haven't invested a lot of time looking for one).
