Is it advisable to branch and merge XML documents? On the surface
it seems to be an easy way to get around CC's inability to deal with binary
files, but will the merged files cause trouble when opened in FrameMaker?

FM-generated XML files?

My group currently uses XML in ClearCase. We do branching and merging
without too much strife. However, there is one gotcha with ClearCase. Make
sure that ClearCase treats your XML documents as text files and not XML.
ClearCase's XML merging is not exactly the best, but its text merge works
just fine.
We use XMetaL, so I cannot answer your Frame-specific XML questions. But,
if you have Frame set up to use XML, you should not have a problem. However,
that initial setup may .
