Did you forget the ;-)? That sounds like very problematic advice.

Oh, you are absolutely correct: it could be a problem. Here are some other options:

Stay at home, take the sick day, and do the work. When you get back, say nothing but reclaim your stolen hours by spending the day catching up on personal stuff you need to get done. Then turn in your completed work at the end of the day. You get paid exactly for the hours you worked, and your company gets its work done - no harm, no foul.

or

Stay at home, take the sick day, and spend the day looking for a job. Work seems to be picking up a little, and there are some startups out there now who don't care where you get the work done.
