I do believe audience is the key here. We've all developed techniques of
communicating and use very different styles and tones for our pets, our
children, different people in the community, and our peers in the work
place. If languages that we learn after the age of six are stored in a
different place in the brain than our native language, then wouldn't it be
true that the different styles of speaking are also kept in different
places?
One of the most effective barriers to communication is the use of
"imperial" language. I would venture to say that people who can
communicate with a wider variety of people are more likely to soften up
their language and use a variety of styles and accents. Many times the
people who do this the best are not even aware that they're doing it.
