Laura made an excellent point - the gmail service is parsing your messages to serve targeted ads.
They're as unobtrusive as the AdWords on the Google search results pages, and are served based on keywords in your email. As far as I can determine from reading the gmail terms and conditions, this keyword parsing returns targeted ads but doesn't store any information about you or your interests (keyword matches).
BTW, to me, this is actually a _benefit_ of the gmail service. When I use hotmail, I see random ads for things that I couldn't care less about. When I use gmail, at least the ads are interesting :-)
