Improve your Workplace Negotiation and Budget Justification Skills
"In my 'day job' as a technical recruiter I continually see writers
who are very well schooled in how to produce documentation, but who
never learned the art of budget justification, negotiation (up and
down the org chart), dealing with difficult people, handling poor
performers, and all the other skills needed to survive (let alone
prosper) in the current economic marketplace.
LavaCon was created to fill that need."

Dan the technical writer was walking past a conference room when he
heard two men conversing. One man asked, "I'm looking for a good
screen capture program. Any ideas?"
Dan held his breath as he waited for the other man's answer. Had
Dan's love for SnagIt - the award-winning screen capture software -
had any influence on his workplace at all? After all, SnagIt had
everything a technical writer could need, plus it was extremely easy
to use. After all, getting SnagIt was really 7 tools in one, when you
considered that $35.95 gave you:
Image Capture
Text Capture
Web Capture
Video Capture
Printer Capture
Image Editing
Image Browsing
Batch Conversion
Free Technical Support
Free Upgrades
Yup - one program with all that. Dan hoped the other man knew what he
was talking about.
"Well, you've got a lot of options," he began. Dan placed his head
against the wall in despair.
"But there's only one that will really give you everything you need -
SnagIt," he finished.
Dan's misery turned to joy as he realized he WAS making a difference.
He would make SnagIt the reigning screen capture champion!
He pumped his fist in the air and did a little victory dance. Mid-
great dance move, the men exited the room and came upon the solo
celebration.
"What's going on?" one asked. Dan dropped his arms. "Oh," he said
breezily, "I just love my technical writing tools, that's all. Don't
you?"

Dan the technical writer was delighted to see that his friend in
Taiwan, another technical writer, was available to chat on Instant
Messenger.
Dan knew it was the perfect moment to try SnagIt's newest feature -
the ability to output to all of his Windows and MSN Messenger buddies
- directly and immediately.
He captured, sent and sat back to see the results. Sure enough, it
worked like a dream, and his friend Josie was chatting about the
screenshot in no time.
Dan mentioned to her that he used SnagIt - the leading screen capture
program - to send the screen capture.
She e-mailed, "This is not the first time you've mentioned SnagIt to
me. It must be very important to you."
"Not just to me," Dan typed rapidly, "but to my job. And the
industry. And the nation. Imagine how quickly employees can
communicate with each other. Communication is improved. People can
quickly show what they're producing. Projects get done faster. All
due to SnagIt's new features."
"Oh, Dan, I can never tell when you're joking," she replied. "But I'm
downloading SnagIt right now, just in case you're serious."
Dan smiled. He was always happy to help out other technical writers .
. . whether they worked across the hall or across the world, they
always immediately understood how SnagIt could change the way they
worked.
