Think about how performances vary from musician to musician. Earl plays
the banjo differently than I play it or Joe Maphis would play it, so the
songs are different, even though we would be looking at the same score.
To be left with just the notes on paper would be a shame. Many things
that make a piece great really can't be stored along with the notes.
I would rather have a the recordings because there is a world of
difference in how each musician interpreters and approaches the piece of
music. I own several versions of "Is That All There Is?" The version
recorded by Peggy Lee is the only version worth owning.
It would be nice if vinyl records were available to back up our CDs. I
wonder how many 78s would be required to back up the Office 2000 install
CD :>)
