I agree with Bruce. Techwr-L needs to remain independent.
Until the STC proves to have changed greatly for the better and many
responsible and energetic members step up, are heard, and are allowed
to implement action quickly, I do not trust such a valuable resource
as this in their hands. I've seen, first-hand, too many initiatives in
the STC wither and decay due to lack of interest, lack of drive, lack
of understanding, and inefficient process.
I didn't want to get into this again, but it keeps coming up and I
can't seem to let it go because it bugs me too much. I really tried to
get things going for the better in my chapter, and I offered a lot of
advice to the STC over the years. All efforts were in vain. My chapter
was and is still run by a sluggish team of long-time buddies who'd
rather get together for drinks on their own and gossip about the other
writers they know than get a meeting together (I think there's been
one meeting in the past year - yes, I keep tabs still, perhaps out of
hope?). The local competition here is a joke... if there aren't enough
entries to make it worthwhile, they just rate the entries they do have
against each other and award the prizes based on best of show and not
on standards. After several years as a judge, seeing this, trying to
correct the process, and being blatantly and rudely ignored, I gave
up. Basically, they bronze the crap they foster and pat each other on
the back for it. That really makes me want to vommit, and is the main
reason I gave up and left.
No, the STC, IMO, is not ready to sustain, never mind grow, a rich
resource such as Techwr-L. I'd rather see Techwr-L cease immediately
and have good memories of it than watch it slowly rot under the govern
of the STC.
Just my two cents. Happy Monday everyone.
