Most of the mail list gurus I know seem to think that the mail list software of choice right now is MAILMAN.

It can be integrated into various content systems, as I understand it.

There are some headaches with it, though. Last I knew, it was a hassle to block attachments. I know there's a work around, though.
Still, I agree, it's great list software. You can also tarball the current archives and incorporate them into the archiving feature that comes with Mailman.
