TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Dick Margulis clarified a point in my previous note: "This is not a
popup, which in the context you mention is something intrusive that
appears automatically, without the intervention of the user of the
browser." <<Well, actually it is a popup, and a popup blocker will
block it, leaving your user wondering why nothing happens when they
[singular ;-)] click the link.>>
You sure about that? I tested the "target=blank", without JavaScript,
in my browsers (Safari on Mac OS-X and IE 5.2 ditto) with the popup
blocker enabled, and it worked just fine. In any event, any popup
blocker that stops you from opening a link in a new window _when that's
what you want to do_ isn't worth the time to download it imho.
