Shannon -
I would never discourage someone from continuing their
education, especially since it's so hard to go back to
once one actively starts a career.
I am a pharmaceutical tech writer, normally doing
software validation and testing, but also writing SOPs
and Work Instructions. There are plenty of pharma tech
writer jobs in my area, Central NJ, one of the biggest
pharma corridors in the US.
All I can say about medical writing and/or medical
tech writing is that I'm not qualified to do it, even
with 7 years' experience in pharma. Someone else wrote
about add'l experience necessary for medical tech
writers and I agree. The medical writer ads I see
around here usually require a degree in
science/biology/chemistry or the like, and some
companies look for an RN.
So, Shannon, IMHO, I would recommend finishing your
education. Jobs are here now and they will be here
later, but you will be better equipped for any job
when you complete your Master's.

Does anyone have resources or information pertaining
to the growth outlook of the medical writing field vs.
technical writing? As someone who will be attempting
to break into the medical/pharmaceutical writing
industry within the next year I'm wondering if I
should take an extra year to obtain my master's in
writing first, or find a job in the field sooner
rather than later.
