IMO, XML just got hyped better than SGML and was introduced at a time
X-anything was embraced as the "in thing". Nobody has given me any
convincing evidence of XML being "simpler" than SGML.
With the inclusion of XPath, namespaces and all, it would seem that XML is
more complex than SGML ever was.
