I agree with Bruce that high-tech groups are good places to network (and
apologize in advance to those of you who've heard this story a few times
before). :-)

When I was in college, I attended a meeting for engineering interns for a
large consulting company. During their question and answer period, I asked
if they hire tech writer interns. They said no. But the guy behind me
tapped me on the shoulder as I was about to leave. He was doing an
internship for a local company that needed a tech writer... and shortly
thereafter, I had my internship (a job that later turned into a full-time
position).
