I also graduated with a master's in tech writing in my late forties after staying home and raising kids, so my employment history consisted solely of part-time or temporary positions! While in school I maintained with my normal quota of volunteer activities (thereby creating an opportunity to learn Pagemaker) and managed to find part-time employment with a department on campus. After graduation, I went to work in that department, finally becoming the technical editor for that college. Some of the activities in that position included publishing a four-color magazine (converting it from pasteup to digital layout), scientific editing, leading the college's initial advances into the WWW and overseeing the college's pre-press division.

I left that position after seven years for health reasons. After an 18-month recuperation period, I was employed by a local architectural firm to do their proposal writing, layout, and other presentation work. That gig also lasted seven years.

Now I'm back to the same kind of volunteer activities I enjoyed before, including working with my local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

Because I live in a small-ish university town and would not have been able to relocate, I feel very fortunate to have opportunities to test the waters and enjoy a career in tech writing. I'm sure you can do the same!
