This email is based on my experience, and my experience alone. I made
the pitch to buy Dreamweaver to my boss
If you are just getting started creating web pages, pick up Macromedia
Studio, which includes Dreamweaver and Fireworks. It also includes Flash
or Flash Pro depending on the version, as well as Coldfusion. I'm sure
you can buy just Dreamweaver (DW) and Fireworks (FW) separately, but I'm
not sure how cost effective it would be.
Fireworks is important to me because I do all of our art as well (very
limited amount) and I found it very frustrating to bounce back and forth
between the resource hogs of Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Dreamweaver MX
(thought Dreamweaver MX 2004 is much better). With Fireworks, I can edit
graphics directly from DW or export from FW to DW with the click of a
button. I have found it very useful, and it helped straighten the
learning curve.
I do not know HTML, but I admit that it would be much easier to create
the effects that I want if I learned a little more. I have also been
impressed with how Dreamweaver allows me to remotely connect to secure
servers using different protocols (in my case SSH) (Linux or Windows) as
well as databases. It wasn't too terribly hard to figure out, and there
are some good tutorials on the web.
All in all, I have been very pleased with the purchase. At the time, I
think we paid $900 for Studio MX 2004 with Flash Professional. I think
it has come down in price though. The best part of the whole deal is
that you get to sing some good ol' REO Speedwagon.
Justin
Speedwagon...what a funny word.
