Again responding a bit belatedly, I guess that's why my shyness tends to
be selective -- more of a problem in some situations than others.

"Shyness" is a euphemism. We have feelings (conscious or unconscious)
that cause us to use the euphemism (as we are doing in this discussion)
instead of dealing with the real problem. Shyness is a symptom of some
other issue
-- usually feelings we have thus far not been willing to face (feeling
we have repressed). When we become aware of the feelings that we label
as "shyness" and begin to deal with them as they are and as we really
feel about them (we have feelings about our feelings) -- and not with a
word that further covers up the feelings (i.e., "shyness") -- we may
well see that our "shyness" reduces.
