Without debating the nature of shyness, I am an Introvert.
Like some other Introverts, though, I have little problem with public
speaking or teaching a class. I think that is because I am acting in a
defined role with defined expectations, rather than being in an
open-ended social engagement with another person.
In the workplace, I compensate for Introversion by focusing on my role
on the team and on the tasks to be accomplished. If the solution
requires talking to an SME, so be it. (I lose a few points on the
General Socializing scale, but I stay in touch.)
I've also been helped because, as the tech writer, I am formally a part
of the product teams and use the same issues tracking (bug tracking)
system as the developers. I write issues against their code, they write
issues against my docs and we hash things out in regular review meetings
(another pre-defined role).
