The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
To me, numbering appendices as chapters is unfortunate. For one thing,
in documentation it is quite possible that at some point in the future
there may be additional chapters added, forcing the material to be
renumbered in the appendices. For another, material that properly
belongs in an appendix should be there for a particular reason and not
simply be additional chapters...or else they should be part of the
corpus of the work to begin with.
The folks who promote the practice are likely as not "unclear on the
concept" of what function an appendix serves in a book...God only
knows what function it serves in the human body, though, other than
the continued enrichment of our medical system!
