I've done this more than once. Suggest you get to know the Find/Replace
feature.
If they've been even slightly consistent in the way they've applied adhoc
formatting, use Find/Replace to apply your new styles, e.g. search for all
Underlined passages and turn them into Heading 1.
(I'd suggest going further and using VBA, but you say you don't use Word
often.)
