Unfortunately, warnings are something we're stuck with.

There's an additional problem with these warnings. If there are too many
of them then they lose their effectiveness. In any business that uses
anything that might be thought of as a chemical, there are "MSDS Sheets."
The term stands for "Material Safety Data Sheet Sheets." (Hey, no one
calls them MSD Sheets; it's always MSDS Sheets.) Even salt, silica and
water seem to have MSDS Sheets. Similarly, chemicals in labs have to
be labeled showing that they are dangerous. Thr trouble is that you
really have to know your stuff to distinguish between the safety labels
and MSDS Sheets for (A) concentrated sulphuric acid (it'll burn right
through your flesh) and (B) dilute acetic acid (vinegar). Warnings where
none are actually needed dilute the really important ones.

There's also the controversial matter of whether certain people need
to be allowed to exercise their right to enter the Darwin Award contest.

I'm currently working on a policy manual for an Information Services
department. The matter of signs and warnings has not arisen, and I
hope it does not.
