Been there, done that. Not only was the salary at the
new company lower by about 7 %, the profit sharing
percentage was lower as well *and* I had to step
down in rank from "technical publications supervisor"
with three employees to "senior technical writer" and
sole documentation contributor for a year until we had
the money to hire additional writers. I also packed
boxes in the warehouse and took a turn one day a week
at the reception desk while our one admin/receptionist
went to lunch.
It was probably the best career move I ever made. Two
years later I was "tech pubs manager," had a staff of 12
and was making 30% more than I would have had I stayed
at the previous company.
