i THINK what he is saying is:

"because others have proclaimed me a guru for my expertise in creating data flow diagrams, i can now make condescending statements about the use of text that are so nonsensical that nobody can challenge them, even though what i have said makes it clear i can't communicate clearly using words, so who the heck am i to judge writers?"

I wouldn't say that LANGUAGE is one-dimensional, nor is the structure of a written document, given that cross referencing can work much like hyperlinks... ie works across multiple levels/hierarchies. And if you say "text" is one dimensional, that's wrong, because text has height and width, therefore its two-dimensional.

It might be that I am currently on a antibiotic cocktail, mebbe because
I have been to Missouri a time or two. I just do not know what Yourdon
is saying in this quote provided to us by Mr. Markos:

"In terms of documenting systems, of course English Departments don't
understand how to structure documentation! As Ed Yourdon (Data Flow
Diagram guru) teaches: Systems are multidimensional; English (text) is
one dimensional; it is not possible to effectively document a
multidemensional system using single dimensionsional text."

I am not trying to be a wise guy by the way.
