If you want to go totally digital, I'd suggest looking into the mp3 flash
memory players, such as the iRiver IFP-340. They are sold as mp3 music
players but are excellent for voice recording (not all brands/models offer
voice recording; check for this). The one mentioned is about the size of a
pack of gum and runs on one AA battery. Battery life is very good (24
hours of continuous play or recording) and you get a few hours of
recording time.

It comes with a USB cable and software for transferring the recorded file
to .wav format for use on your PC. You can also play back recorded files
on the device with the earphones provided.

The controls can be tricky, so play around with it at the store for a
while.

I'd love to have an iPod, but those are much more expensive and require
purchase of accessories to use for voice recording.
