One advantage of an employer paying for an employee's STC membership is
that the employee can be expected to share information learned with the
employer. As a negative example, my current employer declines to
support my membership, but each year that I've gone to the Annual
Conference, I've been asked to share what I learn with them (!). Um,
no, I'm being supported by the Boston Chapter and my own dime, so I go
to leadership sessions and sessions that interest me personally, and I
report back to my chapter or keep my own counsel...
More generally, I've found (from both sides of the manager's desk) that
the clueful employer that supports the professional development of
employees gets both more professionally developed and MORE LOYAL
employees. There's no need to leave to learn new things if you can
learn them on your current job.
