Let me give you the same advice i gave my girlfriend when she was
getting battered at her job in a similar manner (different field).
Do it the way you know to be right. No matter what way you do it, you
are going to conflict with someone anyway, so it is better to do it
the way you know best. If it doesn't work out, you won't spend the
rest of your life kicking yourself.
You are never going to make the ex-writer happy because if you fail,
it makes that person look better (which s/he wants) and if you
succeed, it make the last writer look bad (which s/he doesn't want).

BTW...this is NOT fine. The writer has left the position. The people
who should be reviewing the work are the SMEs, the same that reviewed
his/her writing. The previous writerr is just that...previous.
