1. What are your customers' expectations of you as technical writers?
Initially: Come up to speed quickly on their equipment and be able to use
standard technical writing tools (Word, Frame, RoboHelp) competently.
Over the long haul, they expect me to produce quality work on time.
2. What sort of behaviours do you notice from your customers; for example,
how do they approach you, when do they approach you, and why do they
approach you?
Typically, clients approach me when they realize they need documentation for
their product. This can be at various stages of a project. When I first
start with a client, it is usually a month or two before product release
(although I'm working on one now where the product release date was a week
after approval of the purchase order). As our relationship develops, clients
tend to pull me into the project earlier.

Subject: Customer expectations
Hi all,
My classmates and I (we all belong to a technical communication diploma
course) are trying to put together a business plan as if we were to open our
own technical writing business once we graduate. Part of my research is the
customer expectations and behaviour when dealing with technical writers.
With that said, what are your customers expectations of you as technical
writers and what sort of behaviours do you notice from your customers; for
example, how do they approach you, when do they approach you, and why do
they approach you?
Thanks,
Robert
