Looks like I found a workable solution.

I downloaded Acrobat Professional 7.0 and it works great--images are
not exactly as good as in the original, but almost there--might be
able to tweak the settings. The conversion is the fastest of all I
tried, and there are no out of memory errors.

Thanks to everybody who suggested tools to try out.
