Very few people can answer the job interview question:
"What makes you unique as a X?" with any degree
specificity.

I think you're confusing techniques for the interviewee with questions that an interviewer should ask. The two are not the same.
Moreover, the point is not to show how you are unique, but to suggest why the employer should want to hire you. As Lee points out, employers don't care why an interviewee is unique. They want to know how the interviewee can help the company.
