My advice would be not to follow any one person's advice,
but to network with experienced writers and learn what they
did in their careers and where they ended up. When you
have a fairly good idea of where *you* want to end up, then
you'll have a "knowledge base" of real-world experiences to
draw from to develop your own path to where you want to
go. Don't assume that you have no alternative but to follow
anyone else's.

In the meantime, any job or experience that pays enough to
keep you out of debt and allows you to accumulate new skills
will likely be one you will eventually look back on as a "good
start."
