Subject:"I write the labels" ad From:"Janet M. Swisher" <swisher -at- enthought -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Tue, 12 Apr 2005 11:54:28 -0500
Recently I had to describe my job to a phone interviewer as part of
applying for disability insurance. When I said "I'm a technical writer",
the interviewer said "Oh, is that like in that ad where she says 'I
write the labels'?" Apparently, this was referring to drug labels. I
explained that yes, there are technical writers who specialize in
medical information, but that my specialty is software documentation.
I'm curious whether anybody on this list has seen the ad (on TV, I
assume) that the interviewer was referring to. I haven't, but I don't
watch much TV. Just wondering about portrayals of our profession in
popular media. (I do get a kick out of the CDW ad with the woman who
reads manuals for fun, including as bedtime stories.)
