TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
We are experiencing resurgence for skills, but rates have been low.
With the resurgence, we still find employers pushing for skills that even
outside the normal "technical writer" area, such as extensive business
analyst skills.
With that, the work is out there. It is my theory that "technical writer"
skills alone are not going to be enough from two years ago into the future.
The people that I work with have significant capability with business
analysis, training content development, task analysis, needs analysis,
process and procedure development, skills with Visio, the ability to use
flow diagrams effectively, and so forth. They are flexible in their skills
and in their attitudes. They'll do what they have to do to keep busy (and
paid well).
Business demands have changed. Corporate demands have changed. HR does not
always "read" those demands accurately, and that makes it hard to search for
a job accurately. Understand the market has shifted puts you in a better
seat, because you can cast your resume to emphasize these skills. Then, when
HR professionals the "requisite" skills and the things they haven't even
thought of, you are a step ahead.
If this is too difficult to manage, find good representation with people who
know how to do this.
Good luck!
