TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I have found a lot of ads for technical writer, documentation specialist,
etc.,, that require working knowledge/experience in Rational (RUP, ClearCase,
SODA), Oracle (Various version), C++, Java, etc., (et al, programmers), which
I do not see as background a 'technical writer' would normally be expected to
have.
To look at the 'requirements, experience' in the position experience, it
seems that they are looking for a 18-hour-day split 6-hours here, 6-hours there,
and another 6 hours if we can get
it.
And all of this for $20.00 hour.
I have been to CareerBuilder, DICE, CareerJobs, Americas Job Bank, and
others and the same seems to be the norm.
And then there are the 'make $6000.00 to $10000 a month' jobs targeting
accountants, and all sorts of people.
I even had an insurance company say my resume was right up their alley.
About 5 companies wanted to 'fine tune my resume' so that I could get a job.
At $300-$1200 for the task.
