I think the main deterrent is that employers and recruiters have to pay
to get your contact info. A few years ago, fearing spam, I set up a
separate email address to use in profiles and resumes I posted to job
boards. The only spam I got to that address was job-search-related, such
as for resume-blasting services. Only started getting "normal" spam to
that address after I got lax and used it as a login on a few
non-job-search websites.
I should add that posting to job boards hasn't gotten me any jobs,
though it did lead to one job offer that I turned down.
