Adobe actually seems like a possibility. Each new version of Word seems
to attempt to incorporate more features of FM (in the process making
Word even unfriendlier than before). Course I can't say for the rest of
the programs, but if anyone could do it, they could.

I don't know about 'assume', but it's as likely a motivation as any.
If Abobe were to somehow acquire a government monopoly concern
there'd be plenty of folks insisting they gut it, as though that
were the natural thing to do. :O
