If you're carrying your own contract (1099) and think you're
sufficiently in-demand, you could try rewriting the contract.  
In my last contracts (2003), my terms included a 30 day notice 
or a cancellation fee equal to 4 wks at 40hrs/wk at my billing
rate (with a provision to waive the fee if both parties agreed
it was mutually convenient).  It was a two-way provision, i.e.,
if I wanted to cancel out early I had to give the same notice or
make the same payment to the client.
