Sorry for the late reply, was away giving a drama seminar.
First, to parrot the others: .txt works fine.
Second, InDesign does quite a good job on importing Word files, BUT: problems due to imported Word
files are one of the most frequently recurring themes on the InDesign mailing list
(http://www.blueworld.com/blueworld/lists/indesign.html). InDesign CS2 is reported to be even
better at importing Word.
Third, if you work with styles, set up styles in InDesign which are exactly named the same as in
Word (including upercase/lowercase). On import, InDesign assigns the InDesign styles to the
imported text.
