At school I could never decide what I wanted to do, so my graduation subjects were evenly divided across sciences and arts.
I went to University to study Mathematics, Statistics and Computing but discovered that I absolutely abhored statistics (I still
do). Switched courses to English and French Literature at the end of the first year.
Had a tough time finding a job I liked after college and ended up joining the Army who, based on my academic history,
trained me as an aircraft electronics technician.
After the Army, I still hadn't a clue what I wanted to do, but stumbled on a government retraining scheme in technical writing.
In the UK at that time, nearly all tech writers were second-career engineers so, based on my aircraft engineering background I
got my first civilian job in aerospace as a product support engineer, where documentation was about 40% of my work. I was 30
and wanted more of a career so I took a contracting job as a tech writer in Continental Europe.
