TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I found telecommuting part-time worked perfectly for me. I too, feared
being distracted by my own home projects, but that isn't how it
happened. I "scheduled" my work hours at home and stuck to it.
My work area for "job work" was separate from my personal project area.
At worse, if I felt a chore had to be done before I could work, I'd do
the chore and work a little late to get work-work done. I found I was
very productive at home.
I live alone though, so I didn't have friends or family bugging me, and
my friends didn't know which hours I was telecommuting so they didn't
expect me to go help with errands or hang out for "fun stuff".
At the office, I prominently posted my telecommuting schedule so there
would be no question of where I was or how to get in touch with me.
