Michelle,

According to quite a few studies, if you follow the procedure below
you could be cheating Client A:

>If you're clocked in with Client A and Client B calls, I
> clock out of Client A and clock in with Client B. Once off the phone, I
> clock out with Client B and clock back in to Client A.

That is because we can't *quite* multitask that easily. Studies seem
to indicate that it takes an average of 15 minutes to get back to the
level of attention and efficiency we were experiencing when
interrupted by a telephone call or other interruption.

Some of the most productive people I know restrict telephone calls to
a particular time of day, using the rest of the day for concentrated
effort. Unfortunately, many of us cannot do this and are interrupted
often. Obviously, the time it takes to return to productive effort
when you are interrupted should be chargeable to the client who caused
the interruption--how much depends upon the interruption and how you
react individually.
