Some years ago, I did a comparison of OCR programs for a division of
Xerox. At that time, the clear winner in speed and accuracy was
TypeReader, by Expervision.

I have not used it since, but it has a downloadable trial version you
can experiment with: http://www.expervision.com

Their "enterprise" version features batch processing, among other
things. They don't list import from PDF on their website, however...
