Re: symbolize roles
Admittedly ten years of the internet has many of us oblivious to banner
ads (out of your control unless you have an appliance like WebSense
which my company has).
Banner ads? What banner ads? Appliance? We doan need no steenking appliance. Use your `hosts` file:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Windows, Linux, Mac OS X ... works the same for all. Gone.
Note that occasionally a site's functionality *depends* on the rendering of ads that your `hosts` file may be blocking. Salon.com's 'Free Day Pass' is an example. In that case, temporarily rename your `hosts` file to `hosts.bak` (or whatever), and reload the page. No need to restart your browser or anything like that. Do your business, then restore `hosts`.
I haven't seen a banner ad in years.
BTW, it's a pretty good idea to set the read-only bit on your `hosts` file. Malware would love to get in there.
