TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Ryan Minaker wondered: <<I have a question about "industry standards".
Something that I often see included in job postings for technical
writing positions is the line: "Familiarity with industry standards".
Does anyone know what this means or what employers are looking for when
they ask this?>>
Such wording is highly inconsistent in meaning. In some cases, it can
mean nothing more than that you need to know how to use Microsoft Word;
in other cases, it means that you must be intimately familiar with the
jargon of an industry (in my case, forestry); in still other cases, it
may mean that you must adhere to a standard such as Milspec or
Simplified English or that you must comply with regulation such as
Sarbanes-Oxley or the U.S. federal "plain language" guidelines.
When in doubt, ask. There's no "industry standard" definition for
"industry standards". <g>
